New analysis shows 100 million eligible Americans still aren’t vaccinated

Story at a glance

  • About 100 million eligible Americans have yet to get the vaccine.
  • Vaccination rates in the U.S. have slowed since April and supply is exceeding demand.
  • The Post notes the holdout group ranges from Americans strictly opposed to vaccines and those who are taking a “wait and see” approach.

About 100 million eligible Americans have yet to receive a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine as the nation will fall short of President Biden’s goal of administering at least one shot to 70 percent of adults by Independence Day, according to The Washington Post

More than 63 percent of Americans 12 and older have received one or more shots while nearly 56 percent are fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The vaccines currently being administered are approved for emergency use for those age 12 and up.

That leaves a gap of 100 million eligible Americans who have yet to get the critical jab, according to the news outlet. Vaccination rates in the U.S. have slowed since April and supply is exceeding demand.

The Post notes the holdout group ranges from Americans strictly opposed to vaccines and those who are taking a “wait and see” approach as they wait for the shots to receive full approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A common factor among the unvaccinated, however, is a lack of health insurance, despite the vaccines being 100 percent free for everyone in the U.S.

A Kaiser Family Foundation poll released this week found just 48 percent of those who are uninsured said they had received at least one dose.

While the number of new cases in the U.S. remains low, health experts are concerned parts of the country with low vaccination rates could experience spikes in cases due to the new highly transmissible delta variant.
