A White House official and an aide to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have tested positive for COVID-19 after attending an event together, the White House confirmed. Both were fully vaccinated.

“Yesterday, a fully vaccinated White House official tested positive for COVID-19 off campus,” a White House official told Axios.

The announcement follows news that six fully vaccinated Texas Democrats were infected with the coronavirus.

Coronavirus cases in the United States have been rising, though largely, and with higher severity, among the unvaccinated. According to a recent report in the Washington Post, both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are about 96 percent effective against the delta variant leading to hospitalization. 

“The news today is that while breakthrough cases will happen, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, “the vaccines are effective and prevent serious illness and death.”
