The Biden administration is reportedly shipping the first batch of 500 million COVID-19 doses that the president previously promised to share globally.

Rwanda will receive 488,370 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine through the World Health Organization-backed (WHO) global vaccine sharing plan COVAX — including 188,370 out of 500 million additional Pfizer doses purchased by the Biden administration, an official told CNN. The Administration previously announced its plan to distribute the vaccine to low and middle income countries across the globe.

“Today, we are shipping over 488,000 doses of Pfizer to Rwanda, including the first 100,000 doses from @POTUS’$2 500 million shots pledged and purchased this summer. This is just the beginning,” assistant press secretary Kevin Munoz tweeted Tuesday

Rwanda reported 485 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths in the past day. The nation has vaccination 3.1 percent of its population with just more than a million doses administered.

Data shows that nearly 24 percent of the world’s population is fully vaccinated, but the rate dwarfs vaccination percentages in low- and middle-income countries, where 1.3 percent of their population’s received at least one shot.
