Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) announced Monday a vaccine incentive program for students ages 12-17 offering $200 gift cards and a chance to win $100,000 scholarships. 

“We’re launching this program to help reward teens for doing their part by getting fully vaccinated and keeping our schools, community, and state safe,” Walz said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

All people in the age group who complete their vaccines within the next six weeks will be eligible to receive the $200 Visa gift cards. And anyone in the same group fully vaccinated by the middle of December will have a shot at winning one of five scholarships to public or private nonprofit educational institutions in the state.

Money for the incentive program will be drawn from federal coronavirus relief.

“To keep our schools safe for kids of all ages, we need our teens who are eligible now to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan said in a release. “Our children deserve a shot of protection from these safe, effective vaccines, and kids deserve a shot at these amazing rewards.”

Registration will begin Nov. 9 on the “Kids Deserve a Shot” website.

Cases have risen by 12 percent over the past 14 days, with the state averaging more than 2,800 reported cases per day. Meanwhile, hospitalizations have increased by 22 percent. Approximately 76 percent of state residents 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
