  • More than half, 57 percent, of employers already mandate or plan to mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for their employees.
  • Eighteen percent of employers currently require their employees to be vaccinated.
  • Thirty-two percent plan to mandate vaccinations if the Biden administration’s vaccine requirement for employers with 100 or more employees takes effect.

A majority of employers in the U.S. already require or will soon require their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a new national survey.

The survey conducted by Willis Towers Watson found 57 percent of employers already mandate or plan to mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for their employees.

Eighteen percent of employers currently require their employees to be vaccinated, while 32 percent plan to mandate vaccinations if the Biden administration’s vaccine requirement for businesses with 100 or more employees takes effect. At least 7 percent plan to mandate vaccinations regardless of the proposed rule, which is currently making its way through the courts.

The poll found 31 percent of employers planning COVID-19 mandates said they are “very concerned” the rule could result in workers leaving their organization, compared to close to half who said the requirement may actually help recruit and retain employees. Just 3 percent of those that have implemented vaccine requirements say they’ve experienced a rise in resignations.

Nearly all employers said they will be offering testing on a weekly basis to unvaccinated employees.

President Biden issued requirements for businesses with at least 100 employees to either mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for their workers or require weekly testing. The requirement has been put on hold by a federal appeals court due to several lawsuits from Republican states. A federal court on Monday temporarily halted the Biden administration’s rule for health workers in 10 states.

The poll was conducted Nov. 12-18 and included 543 employers that employ more than 5 million workers.
