Building the Dream: Minneapolis

The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area is thriving. But as people flock to the Twin Cities area in search of career opportunities and urban living, a shortage of affordable housing is pricing residents out of owning homes and driving up the cost of rent.

As leaders across the country search for forward-looking solutions to tackle housing inequities in their own backyards, many are looking to Minneapolis’ 2040 plan, which makes Minneapolis the first major U.S. city to end single-family zoning, as an ambitious solution towards a future of more equitable housing access.

What are the short-term and long-term effects of this plan? If housing shortfalls aren’t remedied, what will this mean for the future economy of the surrounding region? How will the $40 million in city funds, proposed by the mayor of Minneapolis to lower the burden of housing costs, alleviate some of the housing roadblocks impacting renters? What support can the private sector provide and can Minneapolis’ ambitious 2040 plan be replicated and scaled to other areas of the country facing similar housing challenges?

The Hill brought its signature brand of timely political reporting and insightful policy coverage to Minneapolis, bringing together key local and national leaders, housing experts, advocacy groups and the community for a discussion on tackling local and national housing inequities.
