5G technology 'integral' to future of smart manufacturing, says expert

The director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing said in an episode of "Boundless" that aired Wednesday that he thinks 5G is integral to the future of smart manufacturing.

"5G enables picking up the data from machines, analyzing them in the cloud, and then basically making the decision, which then helps us realize smart manufacturing," S.K. Gupta told Hill.TV.

"Traditionally what people would do when a machine breaks down, they go ahead and maintain it," he continued. "Now imagine that for all of the machines in the network, the sensors are telling what the state of the machine is. Then if you start sensing that a machine is about to break down, then you can go ahead and maintain it."

"Boundless" is a multi-part Hill.TV documentary series focused on technological advancements.
