Democratic strategist calls impeachment debate a 'Beltway story'

"As of right now, and it has been for a while, this is a Beltway story. This is something for us to talk about," she added.

Pelosi for months has worked to tamp down efforts among a growing number of Democrats to move forward with impeachment, arguing it could backfire on the party heading into 2020.

However, dozens of Democrats are now saying they support moving forward with impeachment proceedings after special counsel Robert Mueller said last week that charging Trump with a crime was "not an option" for him during his 22-month investigation, effectively punting the issue to Congress.
