Democratic strategist calls impeachment debate a 'Beltway story'

Democratic strategist Jennifer Holdsworth said Thursday that coverage of House Democrats weighing whether to impeach President TrumpDonald John TrumpFormer Joint Chiefs chairman: 'The last thing in the world we need right now is a war with Iran' Pence: 'We're not convinced' downing of drone was 'authorized at the highest levels' Trump: Bolton would take on the whole world at one time MORE is mostly a "Beltway story."

"I think [Speaker] Nancy PelosiNancy PelosiTrump says he'd win the election 'easier' if Democrats impeach him Democrats give Trump trade chief high marks Hispanic Caucus seeks to retain voice in House leadership MORE [D-Calif.] is 100 percent right in focusing on the policies for 2020," Holdsworth, a senior political strategist at MWWPR, told Hill.TV.

"As of right now, and it has been for a while, this is a Beltway story. This is something for us to talk about," she added.

Pelosi for months has worked to tamp down efforts among a growing number of Democrats to move forward with impeachment, arguing it could backfire on the party heading into 2020.

However, dozens of Democrats are now saying they support moving forward with impeachment proceedings after special counsel Robert Mueller said last week that charging Trump with a crime was "not an option" for him during his 22-month investigation, effectively punting the issue to Congress.
