Author Fredrik DeBoer calls for rethinking the push to prioritize college

Writer Fredrik DeBoer told Hill.TV that efforts to push all high school students toward college ignores the different needs and skillsets of students.

“Rather than continuing to try to push everyone into college, we should grow the social welfare state so that people who are not equipped in the academic arms race can enjoy a stable life,” DeBoer said in an interview.

In his new book “The Cult of Smart,” DeBoer advocates for “a dramatic loosening” of requirements in high school and college, for example, an option to sub statistics for precalculus.

He also calls for a greater social safety net through child credit paid out in cash and programs like universal basic income.
