Pollsters: GOP views on Trump almost immune to negative coverage

Pollsters Mallory Newall and Frank Newport said on Monday that Republican voters' distrust of the news media makes their views of President TrumpDonald John TrumpHannity urges Trump not to fire 'anybody' after Rosenstein report Ben Carson appears to tie allegation against Kavanaugh to socialist plot Five takeaways from Cruz, O'Rourke's fiery first debate MORE nearly immune to negative news coverage about him.

"There's a certain group of Americans out there including the president's base, that feel that the media is the enemy of the public, which is of course language that the president himself has used," Newall, director of research at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV's Joe Concha on "What America's Thinking."

Newall said that's why the anonymous op-ed in The New York Times slamming President Trump has been written off by those with unfavorable views toward the press.

"How the op-ed was published in the New York Times speaks to the fact that there is a certain sect of the American public that is quick to write it off because they believe the news media is biased, they believe it's unfair to the president, which our polling has shown," she said.

An Ipsos survey published last month found that 48 percent of self-identified Republicans agreed with the statement "the news media is the enemy of the American people."

Newport, who is editor-in-chief of the Gallup Poll, said Trump didn't necessarily bolster negative attitudes toward the press but took advantage of a negative view of the press among Republicans.

"One thing that we always talk about: Did Trump take advantage or create this situation with the negative attitudes toward the media, but we've been seeing it for a long time, particularly among Republicans," Newport said.

"Whether or not he did it consciously or not, he came in and took advantage of pre-existing, very negative perceptions of the news media among people who are conservative and Republican," he continued.
