Dem strategist says GOP has 'demonized' Pelosi as a 'coastal elite'

Democratic strategist Ruy Teixeira said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "What America's Thinking" that Republicans have purposefully painted House Minority Leader Nancy PelosiNancy Patricia D'Alesandro PelosiThe Hill's Morning Report - White House, Congress: Urgency of now around budget GOP presses Trump to make a deal on spending Democrats wary of handing Trump a win on infrastructure MORE (D-Calif.) as a “coastal elite” in an effort to demonize her.

"She symbolizes as a San Francisco Democrat this sense that Democrats are coastal elites, and they look down on ... your average people, and of course she's been demonized that way purposefully by the Republican Party," Teixeira told Hill.TV's Joe Concha.

"For people who hate Democrats anyway, Pelosi is like the apotheosis of everything they detest about the Democratic Party," he continued.

Pelosi was a frequent target of Republicans in midterm races across the country, often being the centerpiece of ad campaigns.

Teixeira said Republicans have also targeted Pelosi because she is effective.

"Raising money, and she gets things done in Congress. She's a thorn in the side of the Republican leadership and always has been. She is definitely not anyone who can be played.”

House Democrats will hold an internal vote on Wednesday to decide on their next Speaker, which Pelosi is favored in. It would be the second stint as Speaker.
