Dem pollster predicts public will warm to new progressive proposals

Democratic pollster Pia Nargundkar said in an interview that aired Tuesday on Hill.TV that the public would warm to the progressive ideas being introduced by lawmakers, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-CortezAlexandria Ocasio-CortezFeminists should thank God for capitalism Progressive group comes out against Biden's White House bid Trump says Ocasio-Cortez is 'correct' in comments about VA MORE (D-N.Y.).

"I think some of the derision for these bold ideas is unwarranted," Nargundkar, a senior associate at ALG Research, told Hill.TV's Jamal Simmons on "What America's Thinking."

"I think when AOC [Ocasio-Cortez] came out with her idea for the 70 percent marginal tax rates, everyone went apocalyptic," she continued.

"Then public polling came out that actually voters really do want to tax the rich. The actual percentage can be debated but the fundamental principle of taxing the rich for the upper income is totally plausible, and I think we'll see similar things about climate change," she said.

A Hill-HarrisX survey released last month found that 59 percent of U.S. voters supported raising the top tax rate to 70 percent, which Ocasio-Cortez proposed in January.

Ocasio-Cortez has since proposed the Green New Deal, which has been supported by 2020 Democratic candidates including Sens.
