Poll: Majority of voters support a coronavirus relief bill without stimulus checks

A majority of voters support a coronavirus relief bill even if it does not include stimulus checks, a new Hill-HarrisX poll finds.

Sixty-three percent of registered voters in the Dec. 3-7 survey said they would support an additional relief package even if it didn’t include direct payments to Americans.

Thirty-seven percent of respondents said they opposed a bill without stimulus checks.

Sixty-seven percent of Democrats, 63 percent of independents, and 58 percent of Republicans support a coronavirus relief bill even if it does not include stimulus checks.

The survey found 59 percent of respondents who earn less than $75,000 a year support passing a relief package without stimulus checks.

By contrast, 67 percent of those who earn $75,000 or more would support a bill without direct payments.

“I think ultimately why you’re seeing almost two-thirds of Americans saying that they would support a stimulus package even without direct payments to Americans it really speaks to the American public really wanting Congress to do something,” Mallory Newall, director of research at Ipsos, told Hill.TV.

The survey comes amid a push on Capitol Hill led by Sen. Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Hawley (R-Mo.) to include a second round of stimulus checks in the next coronavirus relief package.

The Hill-HarrisX poll was conducted online among 3,785 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 1.58 percentage points.
