A tornado caused severe damage in Missouri overnight, killing at least three people and injuring two dozen more, law enforcement officials confirmed early Thursday.

According to a statement on Gov. Mike Parson's (R) website, the state's capital, Jefferson City, was among the hardest hit by the tornado and severe weather.

“Across the state, Missouri’s first responders once again responded quickly and with strong coordination as much of the state dealt with extremely dangerous conditions that left people injured, trapped in homes, and tragically led to the death of three people,” Parson said in the statement.

“I want our responders and all the neighbors who acted selflessly to help their neighbors to know how much their heroic efforts are appreciated by all Missourians.”

Jefferson City Police Lt. David Williams told The Associated Press that no deaths had been reported in the capital, although about 20 people were saved by emergency services.

Missouri's Department of Public Safety said the three people were killed in the Golden City area of Barton County, near the state's southwest corner, per the AP.
