Chicago Police Department Sgt. Rocco Alioto said the girl had been trick-or-treating in a bumblebee outfit with her family at around 5:30 p.m. when a group of men chasing another individual began firing, according to reports.

Two bullets hit the girl, one in the lower neck and the other in her upper chest, police told the Chicago Tribune. The girl was taken to a local hospital after paramedics arrived.

"This is unacceptable. It's a 7-year-old girl that's trick-or-treating with her family out here and happens to get shot because a group of guys want to shoot at another male while there is a street full of kids trick-or-treating," Alioto said, adding that she was "fighting for her life."

A 32-year-old man, who was believed to be the target, was also shot during the incident and is reportedly in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital. He suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand. Police said the victims bear no relationship.

Police said the gunman and two other people fled the scene following the shooting, the Tribune noted. No arrests had been made as of Friday morning.
