Three people were killed and nearly a dozen others were injured Monday when a tornado ripped through a North Carolina county overnight.

The storm struck southeastern Brunswick County in the Ocean Ridge Plantation Community, toppling trees and cars and causing major property damage throughout the area.

“It’s something like I have never seen before. A lot of destruction. It’s going to be a long recovery process,” local Sheriff John Ingram said at a press conference, according to The Associated Press.

The Sheriff early on Tuesday said that search teams are still scouring the wreckage, looking for residents who they believe may still be trapped inside their homes.

Thousands in the North Carolina county remain without power.

The tornado hit the county as a winter storm surged across a large swath of the country Monday, causing major power outages in several states from Texas to Maine.
