Pressed earlier this week on why the meeting would be held in California rather than Washington, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama “had domestic travel planned for the West Coast and California emerged as a good location.”

{mosads}But at that time, Carney did not confirm that the president would be attending a fundraiser, instead citing other reasons the California retreat suited the meeting.

“California is closer to Asia obviously, and California became a useful place and a good place to have this meeting,” Carney said. “They are meeting at Sunnylands, the Annenberg Estate, which is a private location that has hosted presidents in the past, and will allow both presidents and a small group of advisers to have the kind of in-depth discussions that I know President Obama is looking forward to.”

The president headlined a pair of fundraisers in Chicago earlier this week, and traveled to California earlier this year for a slate of events that brought in some $3.25 million for House Democrats. The president’s party needs to pick up 17 House seats and allow Republicans to take no more than five Senate seats to control both chambers of Congress.

The White House also announced Friday that Obama would travel to Charlotte on Wednesday in the latest installment of his “Middle-Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour.” The president has already visited Austin, Texas, and Baltimore as part of the push, designed to rally support for his second-term economic policy agenda.

“That trip to Charlotte will be similar to some of the events that we’ve done in the last couple of weeks to highlight the president’s commitment to expanding economic opportunity to the middle class,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
