Armed woman arrested near White House

Secret Service agents arrested a woman carrying a gun outside the White House less than an hour after President Obama finished addressing the nation about his plan for executive action on immigration on Thursday night.

April Lenhart, 23, was accused of having a holstered handgun on her hip while she was participating in a demonstration on the north side of the complex, The Associated Press reported. She was apprehended around 8:30 p.m.

{mosads}She faces charges of carrying a pistol without a license, as well as having an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

The security of the White House complex and the state of the Secret Service has been a subject of political debate in recent months.

In September, a man scaled the White House fence and was able to enter the building. The incident, coupled with reports that the Secret Service had failed to realize for several days that bullets had struck the White House in 2011, led Congress to hold hearings on the vaunted protective agency. Its director, Julia Pierson, resigned in October.
