President Obama’s top spokesman on Wednesday mocked Donald TrumpDonald TrumpCheney challenger wins Wyoming Republican activists' straw poll We must do more to protect American Jews 6 in 10 say they would back someone other than Biden in 2024: Fox News poll MORE for leaving the campaign trail to attend a grand-opening ceremony at his new hotel, located just blocks from the White House. 
“Not too far away,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said of Trump’s proximity to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. “Well, in some ways, it's a really long way away, depending how you look at it.”
Trump’s decision to attend the corporate event was an unusual move for a candidate in the final days of a presidential campaign, especially one who is trailing his opponent in the polls. 
The GOP presidential nominee did wade into politics during his remarks, praising one of his top surrogates, former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), for accusing Fox News host Megan Kelly of being “fascinated with sex.” 
The Trump International Hotel is located at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, less than one mile from the White House.
