Carson to consider HUD position over long weekend

Ben Carson will consider accepting Donald Trump’s offer to act as secretary of Housing and Urban Development over Thanksgiving weekend, spokesman Armstrong Williams told The Hill.

“Dr. Carson is still considering it,” Williams said. “The president-elect asked him to consider, and he is still considering and said he would take through Thanksgiving to decide.”

{mosads}Citing Williams, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday afternoon that Carson had accepted Trump’s offer. But Williams immediately pushed back in an interview with The Hill, saying he had been misquoted.

The Wall Street Journal has since corrected its story to say only that Carson is under consideration for the role.

Carson was offered the position in a meeting with Trump on Tuesday.

In an interview with Fox Business Network, Carson said it was one of several offers he had to join the Trump administration. He did not elaborate on what other roles he might fill.

Carson, who grew out of poverty in Detroit to become one of the world’s foremost neurosurgeons, has expressed an interest in helping to rebuild the nation’s inner cities.

But he has also been hesitant to join the administration, saying he believed he might be able to accomplish more outside of the federal government.

Carson is involved with a group called My Faith Votes, which seeks to organize Christian voters, as well as several other outside groups.

However, Carson strongly signaled in a Facebook post on Wednesday that he is considering joining the Trump administration as HUD secretary.

“After serious discussions with the Trump transition team, I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly to making our inner cities great for everyone,” Carson said on Facebook.

“An announcement is forthcoming about my role in helping to make America great again.”
