Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) blasted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Monday, after she called Ben Carson unqualified to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

"Ben Carson is first HUD Sec to have actually lived in gov't housing," Huckabee tweeted on Monday.

"Fancy Nancy Pelosi says he's not qualified; is she racist or just dumb?"

Pelosi called Carson a "disconcerting and disturbingly unqualified choice" in a statement Monday.

"Our country deserves a HUD Secretary with the relevant experience to protect the rights of homeowners and renters, particularly in low income and minority communities, and to ensure that everyone in our country can have access to safe and affordable housing without facing discrimination or homelessness," Pelosi said in the statement.

"There is no evidence that Dr. Carson brings the necessary credentials to hold a position with such immense responsibilities and impact on families and communities across America."

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill criticized Huckabee for the comments.

"This nomination is universally viewed as bizarre and the nominee is clearly unqualified," he said in an email. "Name calling like this is beneath the dignity of even Governor Huckabee. No one seriously thinks Ben Carson is qualified to do this job."

He also called out Huckabee on Twitter, citing the president-elect's past criticism of Carson.

"I guess Trump is dumb and racist too since he once questioned whether Carson was a good doctor," Hammill tweeted, sharing Huckabee's tweet.

The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency."
