Johnson will not attend the inaugural ceremonies at the Capitol and would become the next president if disaster were to strike. 

The 59-year-old became the leader of the Department of Homeland Security in 2013 under President Obama.


His chosen successor, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, has not yet been confirmed by the Senate.  

Johnson will watch the ceremonies under law enforcement protection from an undisclosed location.
