President Trump on Wednesday morning blasted Democrats for "failing" to win Georgia's House special election the night before, framing the upcoming runoff election as a battle between the state and outside interests.

"Dems failed in Kansas and are now failing in Georgia," the president tweeted Wednesday. "Great job Karen Handel! It is now Hollywood vs. Georgia on June 20th."

Trump sent an earlier tweet congratulating the GOP for keeping Democrat Jon Ossoff below 50 percent of the vote.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidate, BIG 'R' win with runoff in Georgia," he tweeted late Tuesday. "Glad to be of help!"

Ossoff is projected to lead all candidates in the race but fall short of getting a majority of the vote in Tuesday's race. As a result, he will face Republican Karen Handel in a runoff on June 20 in the race to fill the seat vacated by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Democrats had hoped Ossoff could win outright to avoid a more competitive contest against a single Republican, but with 100 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday morning, the Democrat had 48.1 percent of the vote and Handel 19.8 percent.

The race drew intense outside attention, with a number of celebrities donating to Ossoff's campaign.

Comedian Chelsea Handler gave the maximum $2,700 allowed under law, while actor Samuel L. Jackson aided Ossoff by appearing in a campaign ad for him last week.
