President Trump said he will hold a news conference next Thursday to discuss veterans issues, one of his top priorities on the campaign trail.

“We’re going to have a news conference … to tell you about all of the tremendous things that are happening at the [Veterans Affairs Department], what we’ve done in terms of progress and achievement,” he said.

Trump made the announcement Wednesday as he signed legislation extending a program that allows military veterans to seek care outside Veterans Affairs hospitals, which have been long plagued by backlogs.

The president said he would be joined by VA Secretary David Shulkin and other officials.

The April 27 news conference will come two days before the 100th day of his presidency, a traditional standard used to gauge the success or failure of new presidents.

Trump could be put on the defensive about his lack of major legislative achievements.

Asked Wednesday to list Trump’s biggest accomplishment in Congress, White House press secretary Sean Spicer replied, “We’re not done.”

“I think what you’ve seen out of this White House is a robust agenda of activity,” he added, citing a raft of executive orders and smaller legislation on veterans issues and regulatory rollbacks.
