President Trump on Sunday said Mexico will eventually pay for his proposed border wall, as Democrats and Republicans prepare for negotiations this week over a new spending bill.

“The Democrats don't want money from budget going to border wall despite the fact that it will stop drugs and very bad MS 13 gang members,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“Eventually, but at a later date so we can get started early, Mexico will be paying, in some form, for the badly needed border wall.”

Trump promised during the campaign to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and have Mexico pay for it. But once in office, the president said it was more likely that Mexico would reimburse the U.S. for the wall so construction could begin sooner.

Funding for the border wall, which Democrats opposed, is at the heart of the current debate over a stop-gap bill to keep the government open. Lawmakers must pass legislation this week to fund the government in order to avoid a shutdown.

Sessions said that the wall will be “paid for one way or another.”

"I can't imagine the Democrats would shut down the government over an objection to building a down payment on a wall that can end the lawlessness," he said.
