Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told first lady Melania Trump on Monday that their families share common ground, saying their nation's citizens support them despite having a media that “hates us.”

“You know in Israel all the people like us, the media hate us but the people love us —like you.” Sara Netanyahu told Trump while on the tarmac of Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.

A local Israel television network, Channel 2, picked up the private conversation in a recording.

“We have a lot in common,” Trump responded, with Sara Netanyahu promising they would continue the discussion over a private dinner Monday night at the prime minister's residence.

The first family arrived in Israel Monday morning for President Trump’s second stop on his overseas trip.

“On my first trip overseas as president, I have come to this sacred and ancient land to reaffirm the unbreakable bond between the United States and the state of Israel,” the president said at a welcoming ceremony in Tel Aviv, adding that Israel is “one of the great civilizations.”

President Trump has had a tense relationship with the press, calling critical stories “witch hunts” or “fake news,” while regularly singling out certain news outlets for their reporting.

The president said last week that “no politician in history” has been treated “more unfairly” than he has been, following reports surrounding the Russia probe.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately. Especially by the media. No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly. You can’t let them get you down,” Trump said at a ceremony at the White House.
