A majority of Americans say that President Trump hurts his cause when he speaks for his administration.

A Monmouth University survey found that 61 percent of Americans think Trump hurts his cause when he speaks for his administration, compared to 33 percent who say he helps.

The poll comes a day after White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump is the "best messenger" for his agenda.

The results are divided along partisan lines, with 67 percent of Republicans saying the president helps his cause when speaking for his administration, while just 10 percent of Democrats said the same.

Forty-two percent of respondents think Spicer does more to hurt the president when speaking for the administration, compared to 28 percent who say the opposite.

When asked about White House aide Kellyanne Conway, 40 percent say Conway does more to hurt the president when speaking publicly, compared to 28 percent who say she helps.

Respondents are divided about whether deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders hurts or helps the president when speaking on behalf of the administration, with 23 percent saying she does more to help and 22 percent saying she does more to hurt the president.

A majority of respondents, 53 percent, think Vice President Pence helps the president when he speaks for the administration, compared to 29 percent who think he does more to hurt the president when speaking publicly.

The poll was conducted from May 13 to 17 among 1,002 adults. The margin of error is 3.1 percent.
