Trump: CNN has been ‘fake news for a long time’

President Trump went after the media during a stop in Poland on Thursday, specifically targeting CNN.

During a press conference in Warsaw, Trump was asked for a response to accusations that CNN blackmailed a Reddit user involved in the making of a viral anti-CNN meme. CNN has pushed back against reports that its reporters blackmailed the user.

Trump said Thursday he thinks what CNN did was “unfortunate for them.”

“They have been fake news for a long time,” Trump said.

{mosads}”They’ve been covering me in a very dishonest way. … What CNN, and others, NBC is equally is bad, despite the fact that I made them a fortune with ‘The Apprentice,’ but they forgot that.”

He said CNN has “really taken it too seriously and I think they’ve hurt themselves very badly.”

Trump went on to emphasize the importance of an “honest” press.

“What we want to see in the United States is honest, beautiful, free, but honest press. We want to see fair press; I think it’s a very important thing,” he said.

“We don’t want fake news. And by the way, not everybody is fake news. But we don’t want fake news. Bad thing. Very bad for our country.”

Trump last week escalated his attacks on the media, specifically targeting the co-hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and CNN.

On Sunday, Trump spurred controversy after tweeting a post featuring a modified video of him tackling a person with a CNN logo superimposed over his face at a wrestling match. Journalists and some lawmakers chided the president, saying he was appearing to promote violence against journalists.
