First lady Melania Trump reportedly helped President Trump pick a California businesswoman as the next ambassador to her homeland of Slovenia.
Melania Trump backed the selection of top GOP donor and hotel owner Kelly Roberts for the ambassadorship and reviewed dossiers of potential candidates for the position, according to New York Magazine. She was born and raised in Slovenia.
Melania Trump threw her weight behind Roberts because she felt the U.S. would benefit from having a businesswoman representing the country to Slovenia, according to the magazine.
President Trump has not yet formally named a nominee to the position.
Roberts and her husband, Duane, are major Republican donors, giving more than $1.2 million to the GOP over the past year, the magazine reported. Roberts also gave $50,000 to President Trump's super PAC, Great America PAC, a month before the November election.
Roberts is currently the vice-chairwoman and COO of the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in California.
