President Trump on Sunday renewed his pledge that Mexico will pay for a border wall, saying it is needed to protect the U.S. from "one of the highest crime Nations in the world."

"With Mexico being one of the highest crime Nations in the world, we must have THE WALL. Mexico will pay for it through reimbursement/other," the president tweeted.

The president has repeatedly blasted Mexico, saying it would pay for the wall, despite Mexican officials saying they would not fund it.

Trump pleaded with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto earlier this year during a phone call to stop saying publicly that his country would not pay for a wall on the border, according to a transcript of the conversation obtained by The Washington Post.

The Post reported that Trump said the wall was “the least important thing we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important.”

The president's latest tweet came just before he expressed his frustrations with Mexico and Canada in the ongoing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations.
