Conservative lawmaker calls GOP trust with White House “shaky”

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), a co-founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, says congressional Republicans’ relationship with the White House is a bit on the rocks after President Trump made an unexpected debt-limit deal with Democrats.

{mosads}”Today [trust] may be a little shaky,” Duncan said in an interview with The Hill. He pointed out that before Trump cut a deal with Democrats to lift the debt limit, “what Trump said, it was solid at least within the conservatives of the Republicans party.”

Duncan added, “with the Republicans controlling the House, the Senate and the White House, the deal ought to be struck with [Speaker] Paul Ryan [R-Wis.] and [Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell [R-Ky.] not [Nancy] Pelosi [D-Calif.] and [Charles] Schumer [D-N.Y.].”

The Hill will be interviewing Republican lawmakers and Democrats all day as they react to the agreement Trump struck Wednesday during a meeting with congressional leadership.
