President Trump said early Wednesday that he spoke to Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore after the former judge's victory in Alabama's GOP primary, adding that the conservative firebrand sounds like a "really great guy."

"Spoke to Roy Moore of Alabama last night for the first time. Sounds like a really great guy who ran a fantastic race. He will help to #MAGA!" the president tweeted, referring to his own "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan.

The president had tweeted about Strange several times in the days leading up to the primary. Those tweets disappeared Tuesday night, however.

Trump, at a rally for Strange last Friday, also openly mulled whether endorsing him was a mistake.

Moore, who is a staunchly-conservative evangelical Christian, is seen as the favorite to win the general election against Democrat Doug Jones in December.
