Martin Luther King Jr.’s youngest daughter late Monday night called White House chief of staff John KellyJohn Francis KellyMORE’s comments defending Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee “irresponsible & dangerous.”

In an interview on Fox News on Monday night, Kelly weighed in on the Confederate statue debate, saying the Civil War was caused by “a lack of ability to compromise.” He called Lee “an honorable man” who gave up his country to fight for his state.

“It’s irresponsible & dangerous, especially when white supremacists feel emboldened, to make fighting to maintain slavery sound courageous,” Bernice King tweeted.

Kelly was asked on “The Ingraham Angle” about the removal of Confederate statues and historical markers. He echoed previous comments from President Trump, who has defended the memorials as an important part of U.S. “heritage.”

“History’s history,” Kelly said.
