“This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present,” he tweeted, adding “#DemocratShutdown.”


#TrumpShutdown became the top trending hashtag worldwide as Congress hurtled toward a government shutdown Friday night. It was still listed as a top trend on Twitter as of Saturday morning.

Democrats had used the hashtag in tweets about the fight over government funding. Republicans hit back with the hashtag #SchumerShutdown, referring to Senate Minority Leader Charles SchumerCharles (Chuck) Ellis SchumerFacebook reeling after damning NYT report Schumer warns Trump to stay out of government funding negotiations Schumer predicts Nelson will 'continue being senator' if 'every vote counted' MORE (D-N.Y.), but that hashtag failed to pick to pick up as much steam on social media as the hashtag targeting Trump.

The government officially shut down at midnight on Friday after the Senate failed to pass a funding bill.
