“Gina Haspel, my highly respected nominee to lead the CIA, is being praised for the fact that she has been, and alway will be, TOUGH ON TERROR!” the president wrote on Twitter.

“This is a woman who has been a leader wherever she has gone. The CIA wants her to lead them into America’s bright and glorious future!”


Haspel, whom Trump tapped to serve as his CIA director when he nominated former Director Mike PompeoMichael (Mike) Richard Pompeo2 US service members killed in Afghanistan after Pompeo visit The Hill's Morning Report - Democratic debates: Miami nice or spice? She is expected to face tough scrutiny from lawmakers over her role in the agency’s detention and interrogation program.

The White House last week ramped up its efforts to support Haspel’s nomination. But the career CIA official reportedly offered last week to retract her nomination.

Trump has praised Haspel for her work at the agency and accused Democrats of trying to obstruct her nomination because she is "too tough on terror."
