Melania Trump's absence from Tuesday's event comes after she reemerged on Monday at a reception for military families, the first time she'd been seen following a 24-day absence from the public eye.

Grisham did not say why Trump would not attend Tuesday's celebration, which was announced Monday after President Trump abruptly canceled a planned visit by the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team.

Melania Trump largely disappeared from public life last month after she underwent treatment for what her office described as a benign kidney condition.

The weeks that followed prompted speculation about where she was, although the first lady in a tweet criticized the media for "speculating" about her absence.
