White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders condemned the deadly shooting at a Maryland newspaper Thursday, saying that a “violent attack on innocent journalists doing their job is an attack on every American.”

Sanders tweeted that the shooting was an “evil act of senseless violence," adding that her "prayers are with the victims and their friends and families."

At least five people were killed and others left wounded after a gunman opened fire in the newsroom of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md., on Thursday.

Officials said they have a suspect in the shooting in custody, but have not publicly identified him.

Sanders is often the main point of contact for journalists covering the White House, and has had a sometimes contentious relationship with the press.
