The Politico/Morning Consult poll released Thursday found that 56 percent of voters say Trump has done more to divide the U.S., while just 30 percent say he’s done more to unite it.

Almost two-thirds, 64 percent, of respondents, meanwhile, said the media has done more to divide the country, compared to 17 percent who said the media has done more to unite it.

Republicans were more likely than Democrats to say that Trump has done more to unite than to divide the country. Pollsters found that majorities in both parties were united in saying the media has done more to divide.

The poll, which has a margin of error of 2 percentage points, was conducted among 2,543 registered voters between Oct. 25-30.

The week during which the poll was conducted, coming just before midterms, was rife with political violence – including the mailing of explosive devices to a number of prominent Democrats, and the mass shooting that left 11 dead in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Critics of the president have accused him of creating a violent political climate with his repeated attacks on the media and political opponents. The president responded to those accusations by continuing to blast the press as the “true enemy of the people,” and blamed the media for the country’s “great anger.”
