Reporter challenges Trump after he says Obama had same family separation policy

A reporter on Monday challenged President TrumpDonald TrumpVeteran accused in alleged border wall scheme faces new charges Arizona Republicans to brush off DOJ concern about election audit FEC drops investigation into Trump hush money payments MORE while he spoke with reporters outside the White House over his assertion that his family separation policy was a continuation from the Obama administration.

“You said your policy at the border was the same as the Obama administration’s. It wasn’t," the reporter said.

“Obama had a separation policy," Trump replied. "We all had the same policy.”

“Sir, it was different — you decided to prosecute everyone at the border," the reporter responded.

The reporter was CBS News correspondent Paula Reid, according to CNN media reporter Brian Stelter.

Past administrations did not have the same policy as the Trump administration, which has prosecuted all individuals who crossed the border illegally, resulting in thousands of families being separated at the border, more than in previous administrations.

The exchange between Trump and Reid came after the president on Sunday slammed "60 Minutes" over its report on his administration's "zero tolerance" policy that resulted in families being separated at the border.

"60 Minutes" reported that the administration began separating families earlier than was previously reported.

" did a phony story about child separation when they know we had the exact same policy as the Obama Administration," Trump tweeted.

"Obama separated children from parents, as did Bush etc., because that is the policy and law. I tried to keep them together but the problem is, when you do that, vast numbers of additional people storm the Border. So with Obama seperation is fine, but with Trump it’s not. Fake 60 Minutes!" he added.
