Fox News poll: 51 percent say Trump is most responsible for shutdown

A majority of Americans say President Trump is most responsible for the ongoing partial government, according to a new poll from Fox News

The survey, which was conducted with the help of Beacon Research and released on Wednesday, found that 51 percent of registered voters think Trump bears the most responsibility for the shutdown.

{mosads}Thirty-four percent of respondents say the Democrats in Congress are most responsible for the shutdown, while 3 percent say Republican lawmakers should bear most of the blame. Nine percent of voters said that everyone is most responsible for the shutdown.

The shutdown, which was triggered on Dec. 22, is now into its 34th day, making it the longest in U.S. history. President Trump has repeatedly demanded that a new congressional spending bill include more than $5 billion in funds for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, which Democrats oppose.

The poll found that support for Trump’s long-sought border wall has risen in the past few months. Forty-three percent of respondents said they favored building a wall, a slight increase from the 39 percent who said they supported it in September. Meanwhile, 51 percent said they opposed construction of a wall along the southern border.

The survey also found that 75 percent of voters believe the shutdown is an emergency or a major problem. Fifty-nine percent said that the situation at the border was a major problem.

But those views differ largely along party lines. For example, 87 percent of Republicans say the situation along the border is an emergency, while just 37 percent of Democrats say the same.

The Fox News survey was conducted among a population of 1,008 randomly chosen registered voters from Jan. 20 to Jan. 22. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
