Trump calls comedian Zelenskiy's win an 'important moment' in Ukraine's history: White House

Trump congratulated Zelenskiy for the win and highlighted the peaceful and democratic election process, officials said.

Trump also emphasized the U.S.'s support of Ukraine's territorial sovereignty and indicated willingness to work with the newly elected president to "strengthen democracy, increase prosperity, and root out corruption," according to the White House press office.

Zelenskiy, a political newcomer who plays a president on television, defeated incumbent President Petro Poroshenko by a landslide Sunday, according to exit polls.

Zelenskiy received 73.2 percent of the nationwide vote, while Poroshenko received 25.3 percent.

Zelenskiy campaigned on few detailed policies, but promised to root out corruption in Ukrainian politics.

Poroshenko, a chocolate magnate, has faced allegations of corruption.
