Trump mocked Stephens after the columnist announced Tuesday that he was leaving Twitter after a George Washington University professor referred to him as a “bedbug” in a post that has since gone viral.

Stephens also emailed professor Dave Karpf and his provost at the university, complaining that Karpf called him a “bedbug” in a tweet, a reference to reports that The New York Times newsroom had an outbreak.

Stephens invited Karpf to come to his home, meet his wife and children, and then "call me 'bedbug' to my face," an email Karpf than shared on Twitter.

The columnist was widely ridiculed online for his response to the incident.

Trump in a subsequent tweet noted Stephens’s departure from Twitter, saying the columnist "does anything that his bosses at the paper tell him to do!"

“Tough guy!” he added.

Trump on Tuesday blamed Democrats for a “nasty rumor” that his Doral golf resort in Miami was hit with bedbugs after he suggested holding next year's Group of Seven summit there.

His property settled a lawsuit with a former guest who alleged in July 2016 he had been bitten by bedbugs during his stay, the Miami Herald reported.
