A U.S. citizen died in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody Tuesday evening, the agency announced Wednesday.

The 32-year-old man was apprehended as a suspect in a human smuggling case Tuesday afternoon and was being processed in a Border Patrol station in Brackettville, Texas, according to a statement from CBP. By about 6:30 p.m., he began to show “signs of distress,” and at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday, he was pronounced dead by a medical examiner.

The statement does not identify the man or the illness he may have suffered from. BuzzFeed News first reported on his death.

CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
