President Trump awarded wrestling legend Dan Gable the presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday, referring to him as a “true GOAT.”

At a ceremony in the White House, Trump dubbed Gable the “greatest of all time,” pointing to his historic winning streak as a professional wrestler.

Gable, 72, won a gold medal at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich and went on to have a prodigious coaching career following his retirement from the competitive scene.

“He won 117 consecutive matches and lost only one. Well, you know, in politics, I won two, so I’m 2-0, and that’s pretty good too. But we’ll see how that turns out,” Trump said at the event Monday, referring to his incorrect narrative that he won the 2020 presidential election.

“He is the greatest wrestler, probably ever,” the president continued. “We’ve never had anybody like him. He has made our country very proud, and he is a true GOAT. Do you know what GOAT is? GOAT. Greatest of all time, right? He is the greatest of all time.”

Trump and Gable were joined at the event by Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan (R), who was an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University for several years.

Gable’s receipt of the award was announced onstage by the president at a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa, in October, weeks before the election, during which Gable endorsed Trump’s candidacy and predicted he would win a second term. Trump went on to be defeated in November’s election by President-elect Joe Biden.

“This guy’s already a one-time champion,” Gable said of Trump at the rally. “But because he’s open for learning and he’s already very competent, he’s going to be a multichampion president of the United States of America.”
