39 percent of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the pandemic: poll

Only 39 percent of Americans say they approve of President Biden’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new poll released on Wednesday.

A new Politico-Morning Consult poll found that just 39 percent of Americans surveyed gave an excellent or good rating for the president’s handling of the pandemic, while 41 percent gave it a poor rating, and 16 percent said it was “just fair.”

FiveThirtyEight found that an average of polling conducted on whether Americans approve of the president’s response to the COVID-19 crisis showed that close to 45 percent of Americans surveyed approve of his response as of Wednesday, while nearly 48 percent disapprove.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll published on Wednesday also found that 43 percent of Americans polled approve of the job Biden has done as president overall, compared with 53 percent who disapprove.

The figures come as the U.S. sees a decline of COVID-19 cases. On Tuesday, the country recorded 110,453 new infections, down from a record high of more than 1.3 million last month, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Amid the decline in cases, some states have signaled that they will be lifting their indoor mask mandates, among other COVID-19 considerations.

“COVID is not as deadly as it was,” Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) said on Monday during an announcement regarding the District’s indoor mask mandate and requirements for people entering businesses to show proof of vaccination.

“Getting vaccinated and boosted, we can’t emphasize enough,” she added.

The pandemic has been marked by partisan divisions over masking, vaccine requirements and other COVID-19 guidance, at times sparking heated back-and-forths between health officials and lawmakers.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll also found that 68 percent of respondents who identified as Democrats said they think “it is too early for states to rescind mask mandates,” while just 42 percent of independents and 21 percent of Republicans said the same.

The Politico-Morning Consult poll was conducted between Feb. 12 and Feb. 13 with a sample size of 2,005 registered voters. The full survey has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
