The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) raised $6.5 million in April and has $25 million in the bank as it works to retake the majority in the House, according to fundraising figures obtained by The Hill.

Democrats said it was the largest April haul in the committee’s history, and 85 percent of contributions were for $50 or less. The DCCC has raised more than $90 million so far this cycle and, like the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), has cleared out its debt.

{mosads}“Speaker [John] Boehner’s [R-Ohio] recent admission that the Republican majority is in jeopardy has energized our supporters even more,” said DCCC spokesman Jesse Ferguson, adding that record numbers of grassroots supporters are stepping up to oppose the GOP agenda on oil subsidies and tax rates for the wealthy.

But Democrats’ April haul was about $3 million less than the $9.8 million they raised in March, when they outraised the NRCC by about a half-million dollars.

The NRCC has yet to release its April figures, which are due on Sunday. But Democrats have outraised Republicans about two out of every three months so far this cycle — including the first three months of 2012 — despite being in the minority.

Democrats added about $2 million to their cash on hand in April, indicating they spent about one-third of what they brought in. But at the end of March, House Republicans had more than $27 million in the bank, meaning their cash advantage over Democrats will likely continue into May.

Democrats need to flip 25 GOP-held House seats in November to reclaim the majority they lost in 2010. DCCC Chairman Steve Israel (N.Y.) said earlier in May the contest will be tight but that the majority is within reach for Democrats. 

Israel’s counterpart, NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas), concurred that neither party can take the race for granted, but he suggested the GOP is likely to hold the majority and even pick up seats.
