The Janesville native got his start in politics working as a legislative aide for Ryan from 2003 to 2004, after earning a business degree from Georgetown University. Later, Steil graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Back in the Badger State, Steil became an attorney for several manufacturing companies, including Regal Beloit and, most recently, Charter NEX.

But soon after Ryan announced his retirement, Steil, a clean-cut and fresh-faced 37-year-old, decided to jump into the race. He beat out five other Republican candidates in the primary after receiving Ryan’s endorsement.

Democrats had hoped to flip the seat blue, and the race drew national attention. But Steil managed to defeat his opponent, ironworker Randy Bryce.
