Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) underwent “minimally invasive” heart surgery on Wednesday and will be recovering in a Baltimore hospital for the next few days, the lawmaker’s office said in a statement Thursday.

The procedure, called Trans Arterial Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), was to correct a narrowing of the aortic valve.

Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, will recover in at Johns Hopkins Hospital before returning “to his normal schedule,” the statement said.

The American Heart Association says the procedure is a “minimally invasive surgical procedure [that] repairs the valve without removing the old, damaged valve.”

Cummings has been in the spotlight lately as a vocal critic of President Trump.
