Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) in a television appearance on Tuesday said the Trump administration has “an incredible disrespect for the rule of law.”

“We’re not even talking about norms. We’re just talking about the basic rule of law. There is an incredible disrespect for the rule of law by this administration,” Lieu told MSNBC’s “All in with Chris Hayes.”

“So we are seeing something that we haven’t seen before, which is not just breaking norms, it’s people breaking the law,” Lieu said.

Lieu argued that President Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his reported claim to Russian officials that he did so to ease pressure on the Russia probe amounts to the president obstructing justice.

Lieu’s appearance followed a report in The Washington Post that said Director of National Intelligence Dan CoatsDaniel (Dan) Ray CoatsJordan, Meadows press intelligence chief on House Intel Russia probe transcripts Overnight Energy: John Kerry hits Trump over climate change at hearing | Defends Ocasio-Cortez from GOP attacks | Dems grill EPA chief over auto emissions rollback plan Kerry goes after Trump over climate on Capitol Hill MORE told his associates that Trump asked him to interfere in the FBI’s Russia probe.

“Why would the president ask people to leave the room? Because he knows what he’s about to do is illegal,” Leiu said of the report about Trump’s conversation with Coats.

“This is obstruction of justice, endeavoring to influence an investigation. We’ve seen so much evidence of this.”
