Top Intel Dem warns Trump: 'Don’t waste our time' trying to remove Mueller

“If President [Trump] fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller,” Schiff tweeted Monday evening. “Don't waste our time.”

“I can only imagine this is part of the effort to tear down Robert Mueller,” Schiff told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Monday night.

“You can’t exclude the possibility [of Mueller’s dismissal],” he continued. “But I think it’s just a way of raising doubts about this man who's well respected on both sides of the aisle.”


He pledged on “Hardball” that if Trump removed Mueller, Congress would move to reappoint him to continue the investigation.

A friend of Trump told PBS on Monday evening that Trump is considering firing Mueller, who is leading the FBI investigation into Russian election meddling and potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel,” Chris Ruddy told PBS’s Judy Woodruff on “PBS NewsHour.”

“I think he’s weighing that option.”

Ruddy, the CEO of conservative news organization NewsMax, was spotted leaving the White House earlier on Monday.

CNN reported Monday night that sources close to the president are advising him not to remove Mueller. 

The intelligence panel Schiff is a member of is also probing Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.
